Petrochemicals

Use foam fire suppressant to extinguish the fire quickly and prevent plant death.

Fire safety poses a significant challenge in chemical and petrochemical production: many highly flammable substances present varying degrees of fire risk and explosion hazards during processing. In older facilities, fire‑protection standards have evolved differently depending on the plant’s construction date. Whether using water cannons or sprinkler systems, foam‑based fire‑extinguishing systems often represent the most effective solution.

Firefighting Technical Requirements

From a fire safety perspective, the petrochemical plant area has three zones that require special protection:

Production Area
In addition to the sprinkler system, a permanently installed monitoring device supplied with liquid by a fixed foam proportioning mixer is also employed.
Tank Farm
Flammable liquids are typically stored in floating-roof tanks, while tanks containing liquids with an explosion risk employ fixed-roof designs. In the event of a fire, both types of tanks are protected by foam application from foam monitors supplied by a fixed‑ratio proportioning system. Additionally, mobile firefighting equipment is recommended for fire suppression.
Materials/Bulk Goods/High-Rack Storage
In the warehousing sector, in addition to sprinkler systems, deluge fire‑extinguishing systems are also employed, working in conjunction with fixed‑ratio proportioners to discharge fire‑fighting foam throughout the facility.
Fixed-ratio mixer for foam fire suppression
Within petrochemical plant premises, pump houses are often located adjacent to reservoirs that store emergency firefighting water. The stationary FireDos proportioning mixer operates on a purely mechanical principle, driven solely by the flow of firefighting water. This allows the equipment to be installed at a location remote from hazardous areas—typically near the firefighting water tank. Moreover, thanks to its low pressure drop, the FireDos proportioning mixer enables long‑distance delivery of premixed foam at high flow rates.

This proportional mixer is energy-efficient and significantly reduces costs compared to other systems. It delivers foam concentrate with precise metering, allowing adjustment of the mixing ratio to suit various application scenarios. The FireDos proportional mixer can also handle high-viscosity foam concentrates and supports testing operations that do not require foam generation or pre‑mixing. Another advantage is that the equipment enables remote monitoring and remote adjustment of the mixing ratio.

Long-life monitor coverage implementation
In petrochemical production areas, fixed monitors or deluge systems are widely used. Monitors are more cost-effective due to their suitability for pipeline applications. Regardless of wind direction, the performance of the monitor nozzles directly determines the effectiveness of fire suppression.

Thanks to the fluid‑optimized elliptical flat‑jet design of the FireDos spray gun, pressure loss is extremely low, enabling long‑range spraying. In addition, the FireDos spray gun is constructed from seawater‑resistant materials and is available in an ATEX‑certified explosion‑proof version for use in hazardous areas.

In high-risk areas, it is recommended to integrate spray nozzles into automated fire suppression systems. All FireDos spray nozzles support either manual operation or remote control.

Mobile fire-extinguishing technology enables flexible deployment.
Fire departments at petrochemical facilities are increasingly adopting mobile firefighting units, such as fire‑fighting trailers. These systems combine versatility and flexibility, serving as a complement to fixed installations. Designed for rapid deployment and ease of operation, fire‑fighting trailers are equipped with proportioning mixers, nozzles, or a combination of both, thereby reducing the need for personnel in high‑risk areas.

Fire Risks in the Petrochemical Industry

Explosion
The primary risk in the petrochemical industry is explosion accidents, stemming from the use of highly flammable substances under specific conditions in complex production processes.
Tank Farm Fire
These include risks such as fires at tank‑shell edge seals, vapor‑phase fires, fires in the containment area, boilover fires, and full‑surface tank fires.
